Bexar County Emissions Testing Begins November 1, 2026
Beginning November 1, 2026, Bexar County joins the Texas vehicle emissions Inspection and Maintenance program.
Qualifying gasoline powered vehicles registered in Bexar County will need a passing emissions inspection before registration can be renewed.
This is an emissions inspection not the comprehensive Texas vehicle safety inspection that was eliminated for most non-commercial vehicles in 2025.
The Bexar County emissions inspection fee is $18.50.
The new requirement generally applies to gasoline-powered vehicles that are:
• Registered in Bexar County
• Between 2 and 24 years old
• Subject to Texas OBD-II emissions testing requirements
The inspection evaluates information from the vehicle's On-Board Diagnostic system to determine whether emissions-related systems are operating properly.

And simply clearing the Check Engine light is not a solution.
Clearing diagnostic trouble codes or disconnecting the battery can reset the vehicle's emissions readiness monitors.

Those monitors then have to complete their self-tests again before the vehicle is ready for inspection.

A scan tool can retrieve a diagnostic trouble code.
That code does not automatically tell you which part needs to be replaced.

For example, a code involving an oxygen sensor, catalytic converter efficiency, fuel mixture, engine misfire or EVAP system can have several possible causes.

Replacing whatever part appears to be associated with a code can become expensive very quickly — especially when that part wasn't actually the problem.
