Auto AC System Diagram Kool2U Auto Repair San Antonio

1. Your AC system relies on refrigerant to cool the air. If levels are low then the system cannot produce cold air.

  • Usually caused by a leak (not normal loss)

  • AC may start cold then turn warm.

  • System pressure becomes too lo to function.

Important: Refrigerant does not get used up. If it is low then there is a leak that must be diagnosed.

Most often this issue is caused by an ac refrigerant (Freon) leak (R12, R134a, or R1234yf). Your cars ac relies heavily on the refrigerant (Freon) to cool the vehicle. Without sufficient ac refrigerant, the other auto ac components will be unable to function. An Auto AC leak can occur at any time but most often it is due to a hole in a connection, ac hoses, ac compressor, ac condenser, or a ruptured ac evaporator. Unlike an oil leak, unfortunately, refrigerant (Freon) leaks are difficult to identify (R12, R134z, or R1234yf). This is because your auto ac refrigerant is meant to evaporate when exposed to the environment.

2. AC System Leak

Leaks are the root cause of most Auto AC Failures.

Common leak points include:

  • Evaporator core (very common and difficult to detect).

  • Condenser (front of vehicle)

  • Hoses and fittings.

Symptoms:

  • AC works briefly after recharge then fails again.

  • Cooling gradually weakens over time.

3. Compressor Not Engaging

The compressor is responsible for circulating refrigerant.

If it's not turning on:

  • The system cannot cool.

  • You may hear no click when the AC is turned on.

Possible causes:

  • Low refrigerant triggering safety shutoff

  • Faulty relay or fuse

  • Failed compressor

4. Electrical or Sensor Issues

Modern AC systems rely heavily on electronics.

Common problems:

  • Faulty pressure switches

  • Wiring issues

  • Control module faults

These issues are often misdiagnosed without proper testing.

5. Cooling Fan or Airflow Problems

If airflow across the condenser is restricted the AC won't cool properly.

Signs:

  • AC works while driving but not at idle

  • Engine temperature may increase

  • Cooling fans not running properly

Why This Problem Is Worse In San Antonio?

In San Antonio, New Braunfels, and Boerne:

  • High temperatures increase system pressure

  • Weak components fail faster

  • Small leaks quickly turn into major failures

This is why AC issues are extremely common in South Texas and require proper diagnostics & not guesswork

Why Simply Adding Refrigerant Doesn't Fix The Problem

Many shops will:

  • Add refrigerant

  • Get the AC temporarily cold

  • Send you on your way

But if there is a leak or underlying issue the problem will return. It is only a matter of time.

This lead to:

  • Repeated failures

  • Wasted money

  • Potential damage to other components

The Correct Way to Diagnose AC Problems

Proper AC repair starts with a full system diagnostic including:

  • Leak detection (not just vacuum or pressure testing)

  • System pressure analysis

  • Electrical system checks

  • Component performance testing

Without this process the root cause is often overlooked or missed.

How Much Does It Cost To Fix My Car AC?

Costs vary depending on the underlying issue:

  • Minor repairs $180 to $400

  • Leak repairs $300 to $1,200

  • Compressor replacement $800 to $1,500

A proper diagnosis is the only way to determine the exact cost.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I drive with my AC blowing warm air?

Yes, but it can lead to further damage if the issue involved the compressor or system pressure.

Will adding Freon fix my AC?

In most cases no. If refrigerant is low there is a leak that needs to be repaired first.

How long does an AC diagnosis take?

Kool2U's Max-Kool AC Diagnostic takes between 1 1/2 to 2 hours depending on the issue.

Why does my AC work sometimes and then stop?

This usually indicates a refrigerant issue, pressure imbalance, or electrical fault.

Need an AC Repair In San Antonio, New Braunfels, or Boerne?

If your car AC is blowing warm air don't rely on temporary fixes that end up costing you more in the long run.

Kool2U Auto Repair provides:

Schedule a diagnostic and get it fixed right the first time.

This issue isn’t as clear cut as hot air coming through the vents. A knowledgeable auto ac repair technician will need to eliminate the possible causes by checking several components first. The auto ac repair technician may begin checking for:

  • A blown fuse or bad relay – If the ventilation fuse blows there will be no power to the ac blower motor preventing air from blowing through the vents. Likewise, a bad ac relay can also be the culprit since the relay takes the small electrical current and uses it to regulate the larger current needed for ventilation.

  • Damage to the auto ac blower motor or blower resistor – The ac blower motor is what pushes the air through the vents in the car, similar to a fan in your home. Auto AC Blower motors that have malfunctioned due to wear or age will prevent air from coming through the vents. Similarly, the ac blower resistor works with the ac blower motor to control the level of how much air is produced to flow through the vents (low, medium, high) based on your preference.

  • Blocked air intake – Auto AC's have two areas where air enters your cars ac One is where air enters your cars ac is through vents by the lower half of the windshield and the other is the air that is recirculated from inside the cabin. If either of the ac air intake areas is blocked from a clogged filter or other debris, your cars ac vents may blow little to no air.

  • Damaged belts and hoses – An automotive air conditioning system is equipped with many ac hoses and belts that operate your cars ac system. Any sort of ac leak, detachment, or blockages will prevent proper airflow from your cars ac vents.

Most often this issue is due to low ac refrigerant. When there is not enough ac refrigerant (Freon) in the system the pressure is reduced which prevents the clutch from triggering the ac compressor to begin its cycle. If enough ac refrigerant is in the system it could also be caused by:

  • Blocked or Failed Condenser – Your cars ac condenser is the device that takes the ac refrigerant from its gaseous state by removing the heat and transforming it back into a liquid state. If your cars ac condenser has a blockage or is otherwise damaged, the air coming through the vents will not be cold.

  • Failed Clutch Switch – If this component is not functioning, the ac compressor will be unable to operate, thus preventing it from condensing the liquid refrigerant into gas.

When you turn on your cars ac and an noxious smell of mildew hits your nostrils, it’s because of the growth of bacteria in your cars ac system. This is common with automobiles that seldom use the auto AC, are older, or that frequently use the maximum ac setting (due to extra moisture in the unit). Bacteria, mold, fungi, and other micro-organisms may develop behind the dashboard on your cars ac evaporator. This growth produces a foul odor that comes out of the vents.

Solution: Auto AC Air filters can collect dirt, water, dust, and other pollutants and after some time producing an odor. Replacing your cars ac air filter will help combat this issue. If replacing the filter does not eradicate the stench, a Kool2U Auto AC Repair technician will need to add an anti-bacterial solution into your car's ac evaporator area to kill mold and other contaminants from the ac system.

Anytime your car makes a noise that wasn’t there before could be a sign of trouble. Auto AC systems are relatively quiet when in use. When you turn on your car ac and hear rattling, banging, or other unusual sounds, it’s normal to feel a bit nervous about what is causing the issue. It could be as simple as leaves or other road debris blocking the ac system producing all sorts of unusual noises. It could also indicate a major component of your cars ac could be in failure and in need of repair. If a bearing is worn out your car ac it will produce a grinding or squealing sound. A rattling sound could indicate your cars ac compressor’s clutch has failed.

Solution: Continuing to use your car AC may only make things worse. Call Kool2U's Mobile Auto A/C Repair Specialists to perform a thorough inspection. A thorough inspection your car ac will be able to determine if a major component is in failure and whether your cars ac will need to be repaired.

Bacteria builds up on your car ac evaporator coil in the AC heater box located under your dashboard. The bacteria from airflow mixes with the condensation from the car ac coils, creating a slimy film on the AC fins and producing a moldy smell. After time, the film builds up and can clog the drain line. The drain line is a rubber hose that begins in the ac evaporator heater box, goes through the floor, and to the undercarriage to remove excess moisture. Once plugged, water from the condensation fills up the ac heater box and begins dripping out and onto the floor of the vehicle, typically on the passenger side.

Solution: If you notice the floor of your automobile is damp, don’t hesitate in contacting Kool2U Mobile Auto AC Repair and schedule an appointment. A Kool2U Auto AC Repair technician will need to determine what has caused the drain line to become clogged and repair or replace the hose as necessary.

When you’re driving your car and the ac suddenly goes from comfortably cool to horribly hot, you know there’s a problem with your car's ac system. It’s possible that the ac expansion valve that dispenses the correct amount of ac refrigerant (Freon) to the ac evaporator has failed. A blocked ac expansion valve prevents the refrigerant (Freon) from reaching the ac evaporator and, if moisture is present, causing the ac valve to freeze.

Solution: Your car's ac should be cold. If it’s not a Kool2U certified auto ac repair technician will need to properly test the ac system’s pressure and inspect components for blockages or malfunctions.

No matter what symptoms your car ac may be experiencing, a certified Kool2U auto ac repair specialist knows how to properly diagnose car AC problems and how to properly repair your vehicle's ac to properly function. Need service on your Auto AC for repair?

The Max-Kool Auto AC Leak Detection system
Patented & Exclusively Available w/Kool2U

Developed by our own ASE Master Technician Aaron Burgess w/30+ years in the auto repair industry.
Our Auto AC Leak Detection System finds the leaks your local auto repair shops miss.
We Repair More Vehicle AC Systems In A Month
Than Your Local Shop Repairs In A Year!

Your local auto repair shop or dealership service department uses an Auto AC Diagnostic System developed in the 1950's!

The current industry standard for auto ac diagnostics and repair involves vacuuming down the refrigerant or freon in your cars AC System. It is a low pressure test. Then injecting nitrogen plus oil & dye into the system hoping to "sniff out" or expose the refrigerant or freon leak with a blacklight when the AC system is repressurized.

So what's the problem?

First, it's a low pressure test only. It produces a kind of hit or miss scenario that tends to find the big leaks but not small and certainly not tiny leaks in your vehicles AC System. It gets worse. The gas blend they use has rather large molecules. So how is going to find the small or even tiny leaks in the system. If your vehicle is a 2018 or newer vehicle it most likely used the environmentally friendly but 10 times more expensive R1234yf Refrigerant. You heard right. 10X more expensive. If your vehicles AC system is an R12 Refrigerant System 50X more expensive. It's not produced anymore. It's like finding gold in your grandfather's garage!

What does this mean for you?

Maybe the auto repair technician gets lucky and discovers the problem the first time. Far more often it means that days, weeks, or months later after repairs you find yourself back in the auto repair shop going through it all over again. That's what frustrated our own Aaron and prompted him to discover a better way to more accurately find the problems in your cars AC System.

All of the comebacks frustrated his very loyal customers who came to expect nothing from the best from Aaron not to mention the added costs for his auto repair shop with warranty calls and comebacks. It frustrated and inconvenienced his clients, cost the shop more money and time, and most importantly Good Enough IS NEVER OK WITH AARON!

The solution developed by our ASE Master Technician is to perform a low and high pressure test with a proprietary blend of gases that is far more accurate at discovering even the tiniest of leaks in your cars AC system. We find the leaks in your cars AC system others miss and we have proved it over and over again. Got to our review page and see for yourself. When it gets Texas Hot and your AC system has to work which Auto AC Diagnostic do you want performed on your cars AC system? A system developed in the 1950"s or a new more accurate AC Diagnostic system developed in 2022 with proven results. Best of all is you can come by our full service auto repair shop or we will come to you! We proved this system out at hundreds or homes and businesses in San Antonio, New Braunfels, Boerne & the surrounding areas.
