What Really Goes Into Replacing a Windshield Correctly?

Most drivers only see the finished windshield. They drop off a vehicle with cracked glass and pick it up later with a new windshield installed.

But a proper windshield replacement involves considerably more than removing one piece of glass and gluing another one in place.

At Kool2U Auto Repair Service in San Antonio, one of our recent jobs gave us an opportunity to walk through the windshield replacement process on a 2004 GM 1500 pickup. Our auto glass technician explains what he checks, the tools and materials involved, and several things that can go wrong when a windshield was previously installed incorrectly.

Windshield Replacement Starts Before the Old Glass Comes Out

Before installation begins, the replacement windshield should be inspected for damage or defects. That includes checking the glass for scratches, chips, warping or other problems that could make the windshield unsuitable for installation.

The vehicle itself also needs to be inspected around the windshield opening for signs of previous damage or anything that could interfere with the installation.

That inspection matters because discovering a problem after the windshield has been installed creates an entirely different problem.

Removing a Windshield Is Not Always Simple

On this older GM truck, age and previous work made removal more difficult.

The adhesive had become extremely hard, and portions of the exterior molding had previously been painted over. Our Kool2U Auto Glass technician also explains how different vehicles present different challenges because of windshield shape, interior trim and the amount of working room available.

Specialized tools such as cold knives, suction cups and windshield wiper pullers are used during the process. The right tools and experience make a difference.

That is true in auto glass installation for the same reason it is true in automotive diagnostics and repair.

We Found a Problem From the Previous Windshield Installation

Once the old windshield was removed, our installer found something particularly important.

Instead of leaving a properly bonded layer of existing adhesive behind, portions of the old adhesive pulled away from the pinch weld.

That meant the mounting surface needed additional preparation before the new windshield could be installed. Rather than simply placing new adhesive over the problem, the affected area was cleaned, prepared and primed before installation continued.

This is a good example of why windshield replacement isn't simply about whether the new glass physically fits the opening.

The quality of the surface preparation underneath the windshield matters too.

Why Windshield Adhesive and Surface Preparation Matter

A windshield is part of a vehicle that experiences movement and flex as the vehicle travels down the road. Vehicle chassis movement can affect the glass and why the bond between the windshield, adhesive and vehicle needs to be properly prepared.

A poor installation can potentially result in problems such as:

  • wind noise

  • water leaks

  • improper glass positioning

  • adhesive problems

  • premature installation failure

Applying the Adhesive Is a Skilled Part of the Job

The adhesive bead needs to be applied with appropriate height and consistency so the windshield can sit correctly when installed.

A bead that is too thin or inconsistent can create sealing problems.

Careful alignment is crucial of the auto glass is crucial.

This is one of those parts of windshield installation that may look simple when watching an experienced technician perform it, but technique matters.

Why Is Tape Put on a Windshield After Replacement?

The tape isn't intended to physically hold the windshield into the vehicle by itself.

Instead, it helps keep the newly installed windshield from shifting while the adhesive is initially curing and stabilizing.

That is why customers will sometimes leave an auto glass shop with strips of tape across the top or sides of the newly installed windshield.

What Should You Do After a Windshield Is Replaced?

Kool2U uses a professional Sika automotive glass adhesive system with a 30 minute minimum Drive Away Time when the product is installed under the required conditions.

That means the vehicle should remain parked until the minimum drive away time has been reached. The adhesive will continue curing after that point, but the vehicle may be safely driven once the required Sika minimum has been satisfied.

Customers should also avoid high pressure car washing during the initial curing period and contact Kool2U if they notice persistent wind noise, water intrusion, or another concern after installation.

Why ADAS Calibration Can Matter After Windshield Replacement

Many newer vehicles use cameras and sensors mounted near or behind the windshield as part of their Advanced Driver Assistance Systems, commonly called ADAS.

Depending on the vehicle, these systems may support features such as lane departure warning, lane keeping assistance, forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, traffic sign recognition, and automatic high beams.

When a windshield is replaced, the position of the camera or sensor can change slightly. Even a small change in mounting angle or glass position can affect how the system sees the road.

Because of that, some vehicles require ADAS calibration after windshield replacement so the system can confirm that its cameras and sensors are aligned correctly.

Kool2U provides ADAS calibration services when required after windshield replacement.

Not every windshield replacement requires calibration. Requirements vary by make, model, equipment, and manufacturer procedure, so the vehicle specific service information should be checked rather than assuming calibration is or is not necessary.

If your vehicle has windshield mounted cameras or driver assistance features, ask Kool2U whether ADAS calibration is required as part of the replacement process.
